Some people say that in the not so distant future, the internet is going to collapse under its own weight - a message we've heard time and again in previous years. However, this time is different, the YouTube generation want to stream video, and download gigabytes of data in one go.

Car study shows customers study cars online
Independent research from customer experience benchmarking firm, Global Reviews, found that 85% of car buyers visit manufacturers' websites before purchasing.  80% use the internet to compare cars from different manufacturers and most significantly, 20% go online again just before making their final decision.

Sound deal
Swedes have become the first to try a music download service for mobile phones taking on Apple's iPhone. Developed by British hi-tech firm Omnifone, the MusicStation service gives subscribers unlimited access to hundreds of thousands of songs for a weekly fee.

BBC on demand
BBC's on demand TV service, the BBC iPlayer, will launch to the public on 27 July. UK users will be able to download popular shows over the net seven days after broadcast to watch on their PC.

Facebook classier than MySpace?
Fans of MySpace and Facebook are divided by much more than which music they like, suggests a study. A six-month research project has revealed a sharp division along class lines among the American teenagers flocking to the social network sites.

YouTube content goes international
YouTube has announced international versions of its web video service. The video site, owned by Google, has launched nine versions across Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the UK with country specific content.

Chris DeWolfe, founder and chief executive of MySpace, has set out plans to exploit the huge popularity of the social networking site, which attracts more than 69m users every month and has been credited with launching the career of singers such as Lily Allen.

Tennis-lovers' site serves up a winner

Blinkx debuts video ad platform
Video search engine blinkx has launched a contextually relevant video advertising platform. The company said its new 'AdHoc' platform will match customised TV-style ads to users based on their keyword searches. AdHoc uses blinkx's patented speech-to-text transcription and visual analysis technology to understand video content and dynamically place advertising against it.

More than half of internet users believe that brands should be engaging with them online, though brands need to play by the rules of new media, according to a survey. The survey, 'Effective Online PR: Helping brands succeed through new media', was conducted by Shiny Red.
