ITS for the Future - Safety, Information & the Environment Editorial - By Mike Schofield, Managing Director, Atkins ITS
|
ITS is no longer just about making traffic flow more smoothly and reliably - it is also about promoting sustainable travel, providing high quality information to travellers and enhancing safety.
In particular, climate change is having a significant impact on the everyday choices that we are now making. Under the Kyoto Protocol (a legally binding international agreement), the Government has committed to a reduction of 12.5% in CO2 emissions by 2012 compared to 1990. Additionally, plans currently under review involve pledging to cut emissions by 60% by 2050. With this in mind, it is no surprise that Atkins is leading the way in ensuring that these ambitious emission reduction targets are met - through environmentally friendly, sustainable designs; ground-breaking research; and large-scale projects dedicated to reducing congestion and improving the environment.

This quarter's edition of Freeflow focuses on this wider ITS agenda - demonstrating our commitment, in the UK and beyond, to the environment, to sustainable transport, to end-user information and, of no small concern to an organisation like Atkins, to road worker safety.
