The original web 2.0 making its mark The term web 2.0 has been attributed to so many different things in the last year, we were half expecting to see it crop up in the top 10 baby names of 2006. The BBC wrote an article in April outlining how web 2.0, in its original definition, is beginning to take hold. Increasingly computer users are preferring to use web-based software instead of programmes that have traditionally been stored on their PC. Wilfing the night away Internet users are apparently an absent-minded bunch. Research from YouGov has discovered that 7 out of 10 of Britain's 34 million users are guilty of Wilfing their work and home lives away. For those unfamiliar with this shiny new acronym, Wilfing stands for 'What Was I Looking For?' A survey from Moneysuper-market.com has revealed that our online behaviour lacks any real purpose. What european women do online The number of European women using the internet regularly has jumped from 51 million to 71 million in the past four years, but their online behaviour is significantly different from their male counterparts, these are the findings from a new Forrester Research report. The cryptically titled "Men, Women, And The Internet - What European Women Do Online, And How This Differs From What Men Do" reveals that women spend less time then men online, but it is still of great importance to them. Advertisers can capitalise on social networking behaviour 25% of social net workers post their views on specific ads in social networks; whilst 35% regularly forward a space, ad or link to another friend, according to research from Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions. The report, called 'Word of Mouse Guidelines for Advertisers' details how advertisers can capitalise on this behaviour to engage and monetise social networks. Traditional media weary of UGC "schism" A new report has warned that the growing popularity of user-generated content could cause an "online schism"; creating an "us and them" environment between traditional media organisations and internet users. The only female social networking site in the iVillage Female lifestyle focused website iVillage has launched iVillage Connect, a social networking facility that will allow its 3.5 million female visitors set up profiles and photos, build groups of friends and family and create blogs. "iVillage.co.uk has always been about women coming together to share experiences and information." said Kirstin Watson, Head of Community for iVillage.co.uk. Radio Wii and PS3 find their virginity Virgin Radio is the first station to become available on the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 games consoles. In effort to reach a younger audience, Virgin will offer a customised "Player" through their console's web browser. "People are treating the consoles as part of their home entertainment media centre, and now Virgin Radio will be part of that experience," said James Cridland, the company's director of digital media. Web TV indexing survey set to be hot tioti Tape It Off the Internet, the TV indexing website will launch in June following five month trial with 16,000 users. Tioti will help users locate downloadable video of TV programmes through the suggestions of fellow users. BBC to open up its archives online The BBC are looking to make their entire archive - thousands of hours of broadcasting history, available to licence-fee payers for free. The corporation has already begun retrieving and transferring programmes ahead of a trial this month. Think of all those classic, Keeping Up Appearances, Goodnight Sweetheart and Birds of a Feather episodes, available online at last. Orange offer juicy mobile internet deals Mobile phone operators, Orange are set to offer cut price data mobile internet deals. The price of accessing the internet through mobile phones has been outlined as a deterrent to use by mobile phone users in the past, but Orange believe their new tariffs will change this stance. Ibiza, Japan and the Netherlands get a Second Life following floods Ibiza, Japan and the Netherlands were flooded in April... Their Second Life versions were, anyway. The dramatic scenes in the virtual social networking site were caused, not by some angry internet god, but by the charity Adventure Ecology who wanted to educate young people on the consequences of climate change.
