Investing in Innovation

Atkins has made a significant investment in research, development and innovation in recent years and it is this approach that has enabled us to stay at the forefront of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) industry.

Our range of expertise and experience has led to significant developments in many key areas.  We are currently working on improving driver safety with projects such as the development of intelligent road restraint systems and Co-Driver Alert (which warns drivers of static and dynamic hazards via after-market satellite navigation devices).  We are also investing into improving our network management capabilities with projects such as Network Performance Management in conjunction with Essex County Council which measure performance against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).  What's more, we're doing all of this whilst ensuring that we are paying attention to the increasing demands of the carbon agenda -

a   topic that is of increasing importance, not only to transportation professionals, but also to the general public who are now considering the impact that the journeys they make will have on the environment to a greater extent than ever before.

All in all, it's an exciting time for Atkins and an intersting time for the ITS industry.  New technologies and ways of thinking are set to change the way we manage our transportation infrastructure in the UK; this will inevitably dictate the way that new infrastructure is implemented in those countries that still have significant scope for development, thus giving rise to further opportunities for ITS professionals like us.
