Aging gracefully? Practical points for employers to consider to reduce risks of age discrimination

Overview

1 October 2006 has come and gone and the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 ("the Age Regulations") are now firmly in force. Many employers planned well in advance when preparing for the new laws, whilst others faced a short, sharp dash to the finish line. Whatever the route, even if employers managed to get organised and put their policies in place for dealing with retirement requests and age discrimination in time for 1 October, they should not rest on their laurels.

Following the Employment Group event at the National Portrait Gallery on Monday, 19 March 2007, featuring guest speaker Freda Line of the Employers' Forum on Age ("EFA"), we consider here some practical points made by her and arising from the presentation.

The EFA is an independent network of leading employers, which seeks to set the agenda for age and employment issues in the UK. In addition to supporting employers, the EFA influences government, business and trade unions, and campaigns for real, practical change in issues such as retirement and the implementation of age discrimination legislation.
